A flame detector does not wait for smoke to reach a ceiling — it sees the fire itself. The ultraviolet type responds to the UV a flame emits, in milliseconds, which is what a fuel or solvent fire demands.

UV is the fastest option but reacts to arc welding and some lamps, so Revere applies it where those are absent and uses UV/IR where they are not.
